On Saturday 13/12/08 @ 10.20 Oban and Appin CRTs were called to Oban Airport after a report of an inbound aircraft reporting an engine fire, the aircraft subsequently crashes short of Runway 01 and ditches into the Falls of Lora.
This was the scenario faced by the emergency services upon arriving at the RVP at the Airport, information was that there were 9 POB, 5 of the passengers had self evacuated and were in the water. The Airport fire service were first onscene and fired a rescue line, using the PLT Linethrower that they carry on their appliance.

Emergency vehicles of all kinds were now converging on the crash scene, and firefighters from Strathclyde Fire & Rescue carried out an initial search of the shore, Oban & Appin CRT's then took over and located 2 casualties on the shoreline having been carried out on the tide.

Oban Lifeboat was tasked and proceeded to launch their Y boat to assist people in the water, the ALB carried on searching further up the loch due to back eddies.
Strathclyde Police officers then assisted the Scottish Ambulance officers and the Procurator Fiscal, where the 2 casualties were found on the shoreline. After searching for sometime for the missing 2 passengers, the teams were stood down as the most likely place for the missing passengers to be found was in the sunken wreckage of the aircraft.

The exercise was carried out as part of the Licensing requirements of the Airport, regulated by the Civil Aviation Authority. As with all exercises there will be lessons learnt and ideas on how to be better prepared next time.
